SubliminalRacism.com

This is the home page of Image Analysts™ All Media Services, founded in 1988 by Arthur J. Graham and Serita Coffee.

“Subliminal Racism” was coined by Arthur Graham in 1972 and first made public by his colleague, Serita Coffee, at a NAACP Press Conference in Los Angeles, California, where Ms. Coffee served as Communication Committee Chairperson.

The use of the term “subliminal racism” is fast becoming widespread; however, most adherents are unaware of the term’s sources and origins. As a result, like counterfeit currency, quick fixers—in the “institutional racism” ranting mode—have misapplied the metaphor “subliminal racism” to “label” and to wrongly accuse others of “racism.”

We are pleased to establish this website to ensure the proper credit for and recognition of our intellectual property, research and professional practice that produced the metaphor “subliminal racism,” its significance and relevance.

Furthermore, this site allows us to disseminate media literacy information of vital interest to all Americans, to deliver the reliable scholarship behind the term “subliminal racism,” and to conduct an ongoing, unified struggle to combat negative images in the media.

Unfortunately, equal attention must be given to defamers and detractors, especially those under cover of double-speak propaganda and strife. As to this endeavor, we will muster all available energies to preserve the legacy of “subliminal racism” and to keep vigilance so that this terminology is not maligned by malicious ignoramuses and castrated by pathological liars and plagiarists.

Most of all, we have established methodologies such as the Image Coverage™ and the Tetranalysis™ to enhance cultural diversity and tolerance. These inspiring methodologies allow us to produce and render insightful and rewarding critical analyses and interpretations of African American characters, icon, signs, symbols, and identification and recognition of our genuine “literary ancestors.”

Our central focus is on “positive and negative” imagery depicted in literature, the movies, paintings, broadcast and print journalism, advertising, and other forms of popular media presentations.

In our continuing quest for knowledge and understanding, Image Analysts™ Presents … the IMAGE COVERAGE, a revolutionary and exciting written report that extends the Traditional Literary Critique and Story Analysis with insightful commentaries based on positive and negative ethnic portrayals—pinpointing “covert” or subliminal as well as “overt” or apparent skin color symbolism.

As Chair of Los Angeles Branch NAACP Communications Committee, Serita Coffee conducted research and interviews as well as amassed evidence from concerned media watch persons reporting to the Committee; and, thereby, initiated a press conference along with Los Angeles Branch NAACP President Joseph Duff, Esq., and with NAACP National Board Member, Mr. John Mance, wherein she made the first public announcement of the metaphor “subliminal racism.” This mementos announcement received widespread national and worldwide attention; and, today, “subliminal racism” is a popular phraseology used to account for covert racism in the media.

On August 6, 1992, The National Alliance, New York City, was first to publish the entire report in three installments. In December 1993 and May 1994 Coffee served as a presenter at Innovative Leadership Seminar (ILS). Coffee utilized video-slide examinations of subliminal messages in text books, analyzed the presences of “Hollywood Color Code” in animated (cartoon) programs, and rendered provocative critiques of Academy Award winning films. The occasion was the first seminar series on multicultural curriculum in Mount Vernon Public Schools.

These seminars were initiated by Dr. Janell Drone, Director of Multicultural Education, Mount Vernon Public Schools, New York. This progressive Multi-cultural Educational Model was used by teachers, administrators, librarians, and other educational professionals concerned with media literacy.

According to Mrs. Hasna Muhammad, Interim Director of Multicultural Education, “Coffee’s presentation on subliminal messages in the media was engaging and inspiring.”

In 1995 Coffee co-authored with Arthur J. Graham the ground-breaking book on “subliminal racism” in the movies, Image Coverage: Academy Awards and Other Movie Reviews.
